Surgical Extractions

Sometimes, it may be in your best interest to have a tooth removed, as occasionally, a tooth cannot be saved. Tooth extraction may be necessary for several reasons, like if your teeth are severely decayed, if you have a broken tooth or an impacted wisdom tooth. A surgical extraction will always be the last resort, and your dentist will always discuss your options with you to advise the most suitable treatment options.

A local anaesthetic will be used before the extraction to numb the surrounding area where the tooth is. Once this has taken effect, they will widen your tooth socket and then gently extract the tooth. Once the tooth is successfully removed, your dentist will give you a piece of soft padding to stop any bleeding from the hole. They will then help and advise you on any necessary aftercare instructions.

WILL IT BE PAINFUL?

You may be surprised at how painless surgery is with our latest advances in technology. The local anaesthetic will numb any pain you may otherwise have experienced. You can also consider sedation if you’re anxious about dental treatments. Sedation will put you into a sleepy state, relaxing you to relieve you of any pain.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

Depending on your situation, taking antibiotics after your extraction may benefit you. To prevent any infections in the area where the tooth has been removed, we recommend avoiding smoking and only drinking through straws during the healing process. Swelling can occur after the extraction, and we recommend applying a cold compress to your cheek to help reduce inflammation.

WHY ARE MY WISDOM TEETH PAINFUL?

Impacted wisdom teeth are common in many adults. If you have noticed any discomfort, pain or swelling in your mouth and gums, your wisdom tooth might be impacted, and it is a good idea to make an appointment!

An impacted wisdom tooth means that one of your wisdom teeth is growing into one of your other teeth, pressing on it and creating intense pressure and pain that spreads throughout the mouth. Your wisdom teeth are the last molars to form in your mouth right at the back. Not everyone has their wisdom teeth come through, and they generally don’t cause problems but can become impacted if your mouth matures too quickly, which causes a lot of pain.

Impacted wisdom teeth can be incredibly uncomfortable to live with and cause unbearable pain. If they are impacted and not removed, they can also cause further dental issues down the line. If you think you might be suffering from an impacted wisdom tooth, please don’t delay booking an appointment with Guildford Smiles today.
