Crowns and Bridges

Crowns-and-Bridges
Crowns and bridges are a great way to restore your tooth enamel or fix teeth damaged by accident. They’re permanent fixtures, so you can’t remove them yourself – only the dentist can do this as they are cemented onto natural teeth or implants.

Crowns

Crowns are used to improve the appearance of your teeth and protect them from future problems. They are also used to attach a bridge. Here at Guildford Smiles, we offer porcelain crowns, which are more modern and match your teeth. This created a more aesthetically pleasing look compared to the traditional metal crowns. Porcelain crowns are more subtle, which is why people often prefer them to traditional metal crowns.

Bridges

Crowns-and-Bridges
Bridges are a method of replacing teeth. They are ideal for filling in gaps left by one or more missing teeth. It is not uncommon for teeth to shift and move into the gaps left by missing teeth, which can ultimately result in a misaligned bite. Bridges are fitted to fill in the gaps. Your dentist will cement the bridge onto the natural teeth or implants surrounding the gap, which are called abutments. The replacement teeth will then be attached to the crowns on the abutments.

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?

Before installing the crowns and bridges, your natural teeth or implants must be reduced in size so that the crown can fit over the tooth cap. An impression will then be taken of your teeth so that your crown or bridge can be fitted to your exact tooth size. The crown will also match your tooth’s existing shade to ensure they are subtle and blend in. Once the dental lab has made the crowns or bridges, your dentist will cement them to your teeth, creating a flawless smile.

WHY MIGHT I NEED A CROWN OR BRIDGE?
Crowns are used to replace teeth that have either broken or lost their structures. They can also be placed over implants, if necessary, and they come in different shapes and sizes depending on what purpose they will serve for your dental health! They can also be used to cover up stained or chipped teeth.

WHAT CAN I DO TO CARE FOR MY CROWNS AND BRIDGES?
Crowns-and-Bridges
Crowns and bridges are designed to last a lifetime, although sometimes, they can loosen or fall out over time. Good oral hygiene is essential when it comes to preserving your crowns and bridges. Strong teeth will ensure that your crown or bridge has adequate support, which will keep them sturdy and immovable and good oral hygiene will help this. Attending your regular dental checkups is essential so your dentist can spot any issues with the crown or bridge before the problem gets any worse.
